The first step is always admitting, so in the spirit of growth (and as a part of Daily Blog Tips’ latest Blog Project), I’m going to admit one blogging mistake that I’ve made with DYH in the past.
Hi. My name is Cory O’Brien, and I didn’t spend enough time picking out a name for my blog. I know, I know, it doesn’t sound like a big, but the one thing that I would go back and change if I could is the name. Don’t get me wrong, I like Didn’t You Hear; but I don’t love it, and here’s why:
- The phrase “Didn’t You Hear…” has an apostrophe. Though I’m sure most people know that you can’t type an apostrophe into the address bar, I’m equally sure that some people don’t, so I wish that I would have chosen a name that didn’t need any punctuation decisions.
- It’s long. Though you can use it in a sentence, which is why I like it, you can’t use it as a verb, which is why I don’t. Single word domain names are nice, double word are ok, but triple word names are pushing the limits.
Minor problems, yes, but still, I would fix them if I could. It’s not all bad though. Here’s what I like about the name:
- It’s shortenable. There’s a reason I use the phrase DYH. It’s easy to grasp that DYH = Didn’t You Hear…, and it’s much easier to read and write.
- It comes with its own icon. Didn’t You Hear… is the start of a question, which means that eventually, you’re going to run into a question mark. Thus, the question mark icon was born.
So there you go; a little behind the scenes for the faithful DYH readers. Be sure to keep a lookout for the second Blogging Mistakes post, as I’ll reveal the mistakes that the rest of the blogosphere has made and is hiding in the closet. Skeletons can’t hide forever.
