…Vonnegut Dollhouse comes with its own dollhouse?

Vonnegut Dollhouse CD

If the music industry spent as much time innovating as they do interrogating, they might actually start selling some CDs.

Take, for example, the packaging that Rethink created for Vonnegut Dollhouse. By turning the package into a piece of art, they managed to create something that can’t be replicated by a digital download.

Suddenly, paying for the CD doesn’t seem like a bad proposition after all.

If only all companies thought this way.

…Bob Ostertag is giving away his music?

Bob Ostertag w00t

Bob Ostertag’s w00t “is a free, internet-only release composed entirely from fragments of music from video games”.

Created as a collage of computer game sound and image, it’s Bob’s first release “to skip the CD-for-sale stage and go directly to free Internet download, under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license”.

What does that mean?

It means Ben encourages you to “download, copy, send to your friends, remix, mutilate, and mash-up” his music as long as you share in the same manner.

If only all music could be so free.

…Sound can play tricks on your mind?

Wow.

I’ve posted plenty of visual illusions, but never an audio one.

To take part, just listen to the following video. Then, when it’s done, replay the video to hear the sound continue to ‘creep-up’.

Weird.

…Floppy drives can survive?

Batch Totem - Trunkeret & IkoniskUsually the music is the message, but Batch Totem (Jonas Olesen) decided to be different, and has gone with the medium for his latest album.

By releasing the album, called Trunkeret & Ikonisk, as a 1.4MB file on a 3.5” floppy disk, “the idea is essentially to release an album on an almost obsolete medium that fits very well with the music on an aesthetical level”.

“Secondly, the scope of the project is to use heavy compression as a feature that shapes the music, instead of a limitation that reduces sound quality.”

I guess this at least helps prevent bootlegging.

…The Simpsons don’t know how to package?

The Simpsons Movie Soundtrack Disc

Whoever designs the packaging for The Simpsons disks must not know anything about the typical shelf, because they seem to prefer things that are more round than square.

The soundtrack for The Simpsons Movie is no different, and it comes in its own donut.

Looks tasty. (And unstackable!)

Here’s something I never thought I’d see: A man beatboxing with a tuba.

…Kanye beat 50 (and Kenny)?

Kanye West Vs. 50 Cent

When two kings of marketing wage a war, only one can win, and in this case, Kanye gets to keep his crown.

Kanye West and 50 Cent (and Kenny Chesney) all released albums on September 11, and Kanye and 50 decided to make it a contest to see who could sell the most records.

Apparently, it was a publicity stunt that worked, because they sold a combined total of over 1.5 million records, and Kanye had the largest sales total by a single artist in more than two years according to Billboard.

With 957,000 albums sold during the week, Kanye’s “Graduation” easily outdid the 691,000 copies of 50’s “Curtis”; leaving Kenny came in third with a respectable 387,000 for his “Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates”.

According to their agreement, 50 will never again release another solo album, though we’ll see how long that promise lasts after the dust settles.

My opinion: No big loss, as after listening to both, I must say that Kanye’s release was so fresh and so clean, while 50’s seemed to stick to the tried and true, though that’s feeling a bit aged after all these years.

But hey, at least there’s always Kenny!

…Playing the guitar is easy?

For some, the guitar is just too simple. Six strings and two hands just doesn’t seem like a challenge.

For those lucky music masters, a little creativity and a unique way of looking at an instrument often creates a new style that is unlike anything seen before.

For instance:

Take a guitar, and play it like a piano. Suddenly, you’ve got a whole new kind of rock:

And because no new style is complete until you’ve played the Mario theme song with it, here’s a guitar playing method that rocks twice as hard:

…Ronald Jenkees drops it like it’s hot?

Ronald Jenkees

Ronald Jenkees is definitely not your standard hip-hop musician.

He squints at you through hugely thing glasses, he has a nasally voice that sounds like some kind of cartoon character, and he says things like “I’ve got a beat right now, and I feel like it’s on fire”.

However, when he puts fingers to keys, magic happens.

Take a listen:
