…Philias can be fun?

Philias

People get aroused by the strangest things, and though it’s tough to imagine what’s going through the mind of a somnophiliac as they get aroused by watching someone else sleep or a dacryphiliac as they get turned on by the thought of making someone else cry, it’s actually kind of funny to see it all in comic form.

Dustin Glick’s Fun World of Philias details 25 strange and unusual ways to get your rocks off, and adds enough hearts to almost make you forget your watching an apotemnophiliac get turned on from the thought of having a limb amputated.

Almost.

…The Grawlix is #@$&ing cool?

Grawlix

You know the string of symbols that come out of a cartoon character’s mouth every time they swear?

Apparently it’s called a Grawlix.

Mort Walker (the Beetle Bailey cartoonist) coined the term around 1964, and though the Oxford English Dictionary doesn’t officially recognize it as a word, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start using it every chance you get.

…Jowling is crazy looking?

Jowling

Jowling (AKA the Slap n’ Flap) is a photography technique where the subject completely relaxes their facial muscles and then shakes their head side to side as fast as they can.

The end result is a funny/silly picture that gives anyone’s face cartoon like proportions, and is perfect for capturing those candid moments.

Just something to keep in mind during your next family portraits…

…It’s Movie Monday: Big Buck Bunny?

Big Buck Bunny

Blender is an open source 3D modeling software, and to help promote the fact that it is a suitable environment for professional level 3D animation, Blender created an animated short called Big Buck Bunny.

Big Buck Bunny is a big rabbit with an even bigger heart, but when three rodents start to harass him, something snaps, and he enacts his revenge in a typically cartoonish fashion:

If you’d like to see how they did it, then check out the Big Buck Bunny website, where you can download the source files for the movie and more.

…Superheroes age?

Old Superheroes

Donald Soffritti likes to draw cartoons of what superheroes would look like after they retired and moved to Florida.

I guess even the mighty must fall eventually.

…Jason Freeny’s work is amazing?

Jason Freeny

Remember Jason Freeny’s “Pneumatic Anatomica”?

Well he’s back, and this time, his art dives into the insides of a gummy bear and a Dunny, in pieces he calls “Immaculate Confection” and “Visible Vinyl”.

I emailed Jason to find out a little bit more about his work, and asked him, “What inspires you to create these amazing pieces of art?”

He replied:

You pose a question I have been asked before and one that is not easily answered. I could give you a long dribbling artist statement on all the symbolism and meaning I am trying to portray to make the world a better place but the simple fact is, these pieces are mostly a combination of my interests, 3D modeling, pop culture, illustration, surrealism, cartoons and a taste for the off center. Ultimately I create these images for me to enjoy as well as my 5 year old son. I also enjoy releasing them into the wild (internet) and see the reactions people have to them. I am thrilled that people enjoy them and that keeps me making more. I actually get a bit down when they don’t go over well, but that makes me try harder the next time. Its become a challenge for me create work that tickles the small piece of the brain that enjoys these twisted guilty pleasures.

Sounds like one down to earth dude!

Who knew the inanimate could be so interesting?

…We can’t live without China?

Boycott Beijing

I thought Stuart Carlson’s political cartoon about the current struggle to boycott the Beijing Olympics was a pretty accurate take on the real issue: It’s hard to honestly boycott something that we rely so heavily upon.

Perhaps the we need to start a little closer to home?

…The Olla Podrida Plexus Puzzle is a challenge?

Olla Podrida Plexus Puzzle

The Olla Podrida Plexus Puzzle is a unique jigsaw puzzle that uses cartoon shapes that can be turned and combined to form a cohesive square.

Though there are only about 20 shapes, it’ll still probably take some time to figure out how everything fits together.

…Disney’s advertising is magical?

Beyonce Alice

Disney hired Annie Leibovitz for their Year of a Million Dreams campaign, and the results are simply stunning. Rather than relying on the usual cartoon character theme that Disney is famous for, Leibovitz opted for a little more upscale approach. The ads, to be shown in mags such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ and The New Yorker, feature celebrities dressed up as classic Disney characters, with a definite eye towards the magical. Current images include Scarlett Johansson as Cinderella, Beyonce as Alice in Wonderland, and David Beckham as Sleeping Beauty’s Prince, with 10 to 12 more waiting to be shot. It’s an interesting approach for Disney, but one that will probably work well for convincing parents that it’s again time to visit the happiest place on Earth.
