…Designgive has a cause for design?

Designgive - Cause For Design

Designgive’s Cause For Design is a site for socially conscious clothing where designers can submit designs, and a portion of the proceeds form each item sold are donated to a charity of the buyer’s choosing.

Their current offering is a beautiful tee called “Industrial Re-pollution” by Maciej Rakowski, and only 200 of them will be printed and are being sold on a pre-order basis.

Industrial Re-Pollution

Already their product line is impressive, and their charities are best of breed, so it’s a win-win all around.

Guinness World Records

Want to help set a Guinness World Record?

Sorough Real Estate recently set the record for the world’s largest banner ad, and now they want to add your face to help raise money for charity.

Up to a million people can submit a photo of their face, and for each photo submitted, Sorough Faces Campaign will donate one dollar to the UAE Red Crescent. Then, when the million is collected, it will be used for the repair and reconstruction of the homes of the underprivileged in the UAE.

Ready to be a part of history?

Then head on over and upload your picture, because an opportunity like this won’t be around forever.

…Some calls should be blind?

A Blind Call

Have you ever forgotten to lock the keys on your cell phone, and then sat on your phone and unintentionally dialed your friend Aaron or Adam or Alexis?

Most people have, and a very interesting charity called A Blind Call wants to turn those unintentional dials into (somewhat) intentional donations.

Basically, you program a special number into your phone under the name ‘A Blind Call’, which should make that number first in your list. Then, the next time you accidentally dial out to your top A name, the cost of the call is donated to a charity for the blind.

It’s simple, it’s automatic, and it turns a common mistake into a charitable donation, so I just hope that it works its way to other countries so that I can sign up.

…Eddie Griffin crashed a Ferrari Enzo?

Ferrari Enzo Eddie Murphy Crash

Actor/Comedian (though apparently not /Driver) Eddie Griffin was rehearsing for a charity racing event today when he lost control of his FERRARI ENZO (yes, a $643,330 Ferrari Enzo, one of only 399 to ever see pavement) and crashed it into a barrier. Thankfully, and yet sadly, the entire thing was caught on tape, so click through if you have a strong stomach for automotive carnage (Eddie was unhurt, though the car can’t say the same).

…It’s Tuner Tuesday: Carroll Shelby?

Supersnake

Supersnake Engine

Carroll Shelby might be the man behind the Cobra (both the modified Mustang versions past and present and the two seat race cars like the one above), the Daytona, the Series 1, and the Viper, but none of those cars are the reason for his being chosen as today’s tuner. No, the real reason Shelby was and is a tuner that few can match is his personal love for speed. Back in 1966, Carroll built two Supersnake cars, one for him and one for Bill Cosby. Bill later wrecked his, but who could blame him, the car had 800 horsepower in a setup that was already proving difficult to handle with far less horsepower. Carroll didn’t mind that though, he just wanted to go fast. Real fast. To make his Supersnake, Shelby took one of the 19 production Competition Cobras and added two Paxton superchargers to the 427 engine and mated it to a three-speed automatic transmission. It’s a simple formula: Big Engine + Pair of Superchargers = Fast Car, but Shelby did it with style and class like no other. Why build such a beast? In the words of Shelby himself:

When I built this dual supercharged 427 Cobra in 1966, I wanted it to be the fastest, meanest car on the road. Forty years later, it will still kick the tail of just about anything in the world.

I think he succeeded. The car was put on the Barrett-Jackson auction block this year, and fetched a cool $5,000,000 for Shelby’s charity. Even today, the car is a stunner.

…The Rickshaw Run is 2,000 miles of crazy?

Rickshaw Run Logo

Having been to India and seen the craziness that is the rickshaw firsthand, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to travel 2,000 miles in one, but that is just what 34 teams from seven countries are doing for the Rickshaw Run charity adventure.

Rickshaw Run Map

Traveling from Cochin in Southern India through “police, mechanical disasters, shocking pot-holed roads and heart-stopping winding mountain tracks”, the teams will pilot their rickshaws to Darjeeling in Northern India over the course of two weeks (or more for some unfortunate teams).

Rickshaw Run Rickshaw

The rickshaws are 145 cc, two stroke, single cylinder, air cooled, four speed, three wheeled death traps with 7 hp and a hydraulic expanding show to slow you down from the top speed of 55 kmph (though they go faster down hill). The roads are described as “average, bad, terrible and non-existent depending on where you go”. At the end of the run, the rickshaws will be donated to local taxi drivers who are usually forced to work day and night just to pay off the huge debt they take on from purchasing their rickshaw, and donations will be made to Mercy Corp, the trip’s fundraising partner. I just wish good luck and good vaccinations to those who participate.

…MacHeist is over and the bundle is a steal?

MacHeist

The heists are over, and MacHeist has started to sell the bundle, an amazing collection of award-winning applications, for a ridiculously low $49 (over 80% off the normal price). As an added bonus, when you buy the bundle, 25% of your purchase is donated to a charity of your choice. Already, the value of the bundle has reached $288.75, and if 10,000 bundles are sold, the value will increase to $356.74. Those who participated in all of the heists, and who purchase the bundle (provided that 10,000 of them are sold), will received a combined $608.24 worth of applications for only $39. I applaud the MacHeist crew for the amazing MacVenture they managed to put on. The heists were challenging, far reaching, and above all, fun, the apps are beyond what I think anyone expected, and the price is unbeatable. Hopefully this ushers in a new breed of interactive sales games, creative selling methods, and a growth of the independent Mac developer community as a whole. So if you like great deals, Mac software, and charity, head on over to MacHeist and buy the bundle. Hubert would want you to.

…There are eight Diggsonalities?

Valleywag is starting a series of posts called Diggbait, a blatant (and smart) attempt to get onto the front page of Digg. Thankfully, it’s being done as a charity drive (in addition to the nice and easy advertising), with various and hopefully numerous people and companies agreeing to donate $10 per Diggbait entry that gets onto the Digg front page to Child’s Play, a charity that donates toys to kids in hospitals around the country (and who doesn’t love that). Their first entry, The 8 People You Meet On Digg, is a very funny, and very accurate portrayal of the various Diggsonalities. Included are The Überdigger, Kevin Rose’s Special Friend, The Mastur-Digg-baiter, and The Value Adder. Read through for a full description, and don’t forget to Digg me down.
