South by Southwest (AKA SXSW) is an interactive, film, and music festival that takes place every year in Austin, Texas.
Because many of the bands that perform there each year are trying to make it big and break into the scene, they release an official torrent with most of the music from the festival for you to download and enjoy.
This years torrent contained 763 tracks, and played end to end, would be nearly 48 hours of continuous music.
If that sounds like a lot to go through to find what you like, that’s because it is, so Paul Ford decided to listen to them all and give you a kind of cheat sheet for finding the music that you like.
His chart ranks each of the songs on a one to five scale, and gives each a six-word review, making it easy to find the good stuff.
If you’re looking to be on the cutting edge of the music scene, then head on over to the download link and fire up your favorite torrent downloader, because it doesn’t get much rawer than this.

Kitsune Noir wants to go beyond everyday blogging, and has begun a project called The Desktop Wallpaper Project to do so.
Each Wednesday, one new desktop wallpaper from a collection of artists and designers will be released, and it will be free to download in a multitude of monitor sizes, as well as iPhone and PSP versions.
So far, over 60 artists are involved, and some have submitted multiple works, so if you’re a fan of creative wallpapers, then check stop by on Wednesdays and see what’s new.

If you’re doing any kind of ‘for print’ creative work, it’s important to calibrate your monitor so that what you see on screen is what you see on paper.
Calibrize is a new freeware app that’s designed to help you “calibrate the colors of your monitor in three simple steps. Just download the software and follow the procedure to generate a reliable color ‘profile’ and adjust the colors of your monitor automatically.”
Are you ready to Calibrize?

DJ Earworm’s United State of Pop is an incredibly impressive mashup of the 25 most popular songs of 2007. (According to Billboard.)
Besides saying that it’s amazing, it’s hard to describe, so just give it a download and see what you think. (But prepare to be united.)

If the music industry spent as much time innovating as they do interrogating, they might actually start selling some CDs.
Take, for example, the packaging that Rethink created for Vonnegut Dollhouse. By turning the package into a piece of art, they managed to create something that can’t be replicated by a digital download.
Suddenly, paying for the CD doesn’t seem like a bad proposition after all.
If only all companies thought this way.

Bob Ostertag’s w00t “is a free, internet-only release composed entirely from fragments of music from video games”.
Created as a collage of computer game sound and image, it’s Bob’s first release “to skip the CD-for-sale stage and go directly to free Internet download, under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license”.
What does that mean?
It means Ben encourages you to “download, copy, send to your friends, remix, mutilate, and mash-up” his music as long as you share in the same manner.
If only all music could be so free.

Here’s an interesting move by Microsoft: They figure that most college students are smart enough to steal a copy of Office Ultimate 2007 and get away with it, so instead of getting $0 for all of their hard work, the ‘soft guys decided to let students ‘steal’ a copy for only $59.95. (The regular price is $679!)
It’s a digital copy, so they must download to install, but considering that’s what students would need to do for a ‘stolen’ copy anyways, you’ve got to assume that downloading isn’t much of a deterrent anymore.
All you need is a .edu email and .5 units.
I wonder how much a unit at the local city college would cost…

Couldn’t make it to this year’s Sundance Film Festival, but still want to check out all of the “one in one hundred of these will be cool” goodness? Well, lucky for you, this year Sundance is offering every film they show at the festival online and ready for download. This isn’t even a pay as you go type thing either; they’re all free and for the taking. Yes, you’re going to have to skip the crowds and the craziness that is the festival itself, but I think you’ll find a way to cope (I’m coping with free downloads).

Banksy, the quite famous graffiti artist, got a little tired of people selling bootleg copies of his work on eBay and profiting off of those who didn’t know better, so he’s decided to give it all away. On his website, he has posted a selection of large, high-res images of many of his most famous pieces for you to download, print out and enjoy. RIAA, are you listening?
