…It’s Tuner Tuesday: Don Stellhorn’s 1964 Pontiac GTO?

Don Stellhorn’s 1964 Pontiac GTO

Don Stellhorn’s 1964 Pontiac GTO could be called Beauty and the Beast. Though outside it’s all flashy paint with a show quality shine, inside it’s all business, and this car is made to go.

After buying the car for $1,100, Don and his dad set out to restore and build a car that Don could learn to drive in, but as Don’s interest in racing grew, he soon began to push the limits.

Unfortunately, the limits pushed back, and Don wrecked the car at nearly 80 mph after loosing the breaks going into a turn at Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia.

Faced with the decision to scrap the car and call it a day or rebuild from the ground up, Don decided to build the car the way he had always dreamed, and ended up with the masterpiece you see before you.

Don Stellhorn’s 1964 Pontiac GTO Details

Featuring three-piece one-off wheels from Complete Custom Wheel (the suspension what literally build around the wheel choice, instead of the other way around), a beefed up braking system to prevent repeat mishaps, a fully customized suspension system (Don took a job at SLP just so he could play with their metal working toys), a hand built body that Don himself created (everything but the roof and the quarter-panels is new), a full roll cage, 430 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque from the 455 cubic inch, and a custom Muncie M-22 transmission, this goat is made to race.

And race it he does, as Don himself says, “Some people are surprised that I race it because the car is so nice and would be hard to fix if it were wrecked. I may have a few moments in the pits or on the line where I worry about the car, but once I’m out on the track, my mind is on the race. If you took my pulse right now, it would probably be higher than when I’m racing.”

Well there’s no surprise here Don, because if I had a car like that, I don’t think you could drag me off of the track either.

…The Confederate Fighter is an amazing bike?

Confederate Motorcycles Fighter

Confederate Motorcycles have always been a cut above.

After nearly being wiped out by Katrina, Confederate is back and better than ever with the release of their new Fighter bike.

Featuring tons of carbon fiber and titanium, including the front “blade” style suspension, aggressive lines and enough speed to scare just about anyone (top speed is north of 190 mph), the Fighter is just plain sexy.

Confederate bikes have always been known for their fusing of raw power and crisp simplicity, and in words straight from the company’s mouth,

It’s an evolution of the machine, at once taken back down to its core elements while being reinvented and re-engineered for optimal performance. It’s our street-legal sci-fi dream come to life, in the form of the limited-edition Fighter Motorcycle.

If you’re looking to score one of the 45 being made, then you better have your checkbook ready, because the first one off the lot carries a price tag of $110,000, along with special Neiman Marcus edition features, and is sure to go quick. (In more ways than one!)

…It’s Tuner Tuesday: Ariel Atom Clone?

The Ariel Atom is the only car to ever destroy Jeremy Clarkson’s face:

However, despite its looks, this car isn’t the Ariel Atom:

Ariel Atom Clone

No, this car is a home-built Ariel Atom clone that’s the end result of a gearhead with a garage and a dream. (And 800+ hours of work.)

Ariel Atom Clone Detail

Featuring stainless panels from old appliances, black body panels from an ancient kayak and an old doghouse, a throttle pedal from salvaged parts that were the result of a dumpster dive at a local engineering firm, and the k20a3 engine out of a wrecked RSX, it’s also an eco-friendly car that shows that recycling can be quick too.

Specs come in at 4.5 seconds to 60, and 35+ MPG, so it’s not bad in the performance department either.

A home-built dream car pieced together from scraps lying around the house?

It doesn’t get much more tuner than that.

…Quid Pro Quo looks intense?

Quid Pro QuoIf you’re looking to get a little outside of the ordinary with your next film choice, then definitely check out Quid Pro Quo.

Isaac Knott (Nick Stahl) is a Public Radio reporter in New York City. When he was eight, his mother and father died in an automobile accident that left him in a wheelchair.

On air, Isaac recounts how he recently received an anonymous tip from someone identified only as “Ancient Chinese Girl.” She tells him a perfectly able-bodied man walked into an emergency ward downtown, and attempted to bribe a doctor into amputating his leg.

As Isaac investigates the eerie tip, he encounters Fiona (Vera Farmiga) who, through her own quandary, leads Isaac to a netherworld of people afflicted with a perverse desire to be disabled. Like a contemporary noir detective film, Quid Pro Quo follows Isaac as he embarks on a dream-like journey to pull back the layers of what makes people feel whole.

This quixotic entanglement between reality and its reinterpretation through desire is the heart and soul of Quid Pro Quo. Isaac is drawn to Fiona’s dark side because somewhere in the strata of her perversion lies an underlying truth about himself. He is confined to a wheelchair because of an accident. What can he possibly learn about himself from Fiona’s desire to be like him? The answer of course is everything.

…The paperless home is in our future?

Paperless Home

According to The New York Times, we’re closer to a paperless world than most people realize.

Documents can be scanned, photos are all digital, phonebooks are non-existent, and if it can’t be Googled, then it doesn’t exist.

Our computers are quickly becoming the storage solution for almost everything, and paper is falling out of fashion as a means of documentation.

What does this mean for the average person?

Not much now, though in a few years, a Jetsons home may not be such a pie in the sky dream after all.

…The Polaroid and the Viper are dead?

Viper PolaroidIf you’re still using a Polaroid camera to capture life on film, then be sure to snap a shot of the next Dodge Viper that you see, because both are soon going to be gone.

Polaroid has confirmed that they will no longer produce instant film after this year, and it’s rumored that Dodge will no longer be making the Viper after 2011, which means that the loss of a quirky technology and a venomous supercar come as a one two punch.

All is not lost however, as old Polaroid cameras can turn into quite the clever webcam, and the Viper’s demise hopefully means that Dodge has another supercar in the works, but the news definitely puts a damper on my dreams of Viper ownership. (The Viper was the car that got me excited about cars in the first place.)

Excuse me now while I mourn.
