…DYH is in Chicago?

Chicago

I’m going on a work related trip to Chicago today, so DYH is going to be light on the updates, but in place of my normal posts, I’ve added tons of cool/great/awesome/semi-lame links from my “write about this one day” pile to the DidntYouHear.com Facebook Page.

If you haven’t already, be sure to become a fan of the page, since I’m going to try to use it more often as a place to put all of the interesting links that I find that I just don’t have time to write a full post about.

See you there!

…It’s TGI Friday: I Heart T-Shirts?

I Heart T-Shirts

Want to win a free t-shirt? Then read on:

If you read DYH with any kind of regularity, then you’ve probably noticed that I’m a huge t-shirt fanatic. I own and wear far too many of them, but I can never get enough. I’m always on the lookout for new and unique shirts, and often when I find them, I post about them here.

However, I’ve wanted to start a separate t-shirt blog for quite some time now, so I’ve decided to do a little experiment to see if I can use Facebook to do it.

Thus, I’ve started a page on Facebook called “I Heart T-Shirts”, and I’m going to use it as a sort of mini-blog, posting about the latest t-shirt designs that I find and fall in love with.

If you’ve got a Facebook account, head on over to the page and check it out.

There, I’ve gathered up links to some of my favorite t-shirt stores, blogs and coupon codes, and I’m also going to be using the “Posted Items” area as a mini blog where I’ll share links to some of the newest and coolest designs out there.

To get this up and running though, it would be great to have people become fans of the page, which is why I’m going to be doing a giveaway on Sunday, May 11 to one random (and lucky) fan.

To enter, just go to the I Heart T-Shirts page and click “Become A Fan”. Then, on Sunday, I’ll select one fan at random from those that have signed up and I’ll send them a $25 Threadless Gift Certificate.

Since this is an experiment, I encourage you to contact me with any comments , questions or suggestions that you have about the page. Feel free to either email me here, or send me a message through the Facebook system.

Also, since Facebook is a community-based site after all, feel free to share photos, and videos of you and your favorite t-shirt designs on the page. Plus, if you can tell any of your t-shirt loving friends about the page, I would greatly appreciate it.

(Lastly, if you haven’t already, check out the DidntYouHear.com Page on Facebook!)

See you there!

…DYH is naked?

CSS Naked Day

Today is CSS Naked Day, and in support, I’ve stripped off all of the CSS styling from this site to give you a glimpse at what it would be like to view DYH in the nude.

CSS Naked Day was designed to promote Web Standards, including the proper use of “(x)html, semantic markup, a good hierarchy structure, and of course, a good ‘ol play on words”.

Worry not, however, as DYH will be fully covered up by this time tomorrow.

Until then though, be sure to appreciate my <body>.

…Yesterday was April Fools’ Day?

“You know the rules, and so do I…”

Yesterday was April Fools’ Day, but I feel like it should have just been called Official Rick Roll Day, since so many sites (DYH included) used it as an excuse for a little meme misdirection. (YouTube Rick Rolling anyone and everyone that clicked on a featured video link was a classic!)

However, not all sites went for the easy/obvious gag, and some managed to pull some pretty funny stunts. Below are some of my favorites:

…DYH is changing hosts?

Ahm bizzy sleepn.

Faithful DYH readers,

Good News: DidntYouHear.com is now on a new, and hopefully 20 times better host! (Full explanation of the reasons for the switch, along with impressions of the new host coming soon.)

Bad News: It took me over 6 hours to make the change, and now I need some sleep!

Thus, DYH is going to be a little lite on the updates today, but I’ll have some new stuff up ASAP, and the site should be fully functioning and normal again in about 24 hours. (For now, everything has to cycle through http://s18719.gridserver.com/)

Thanks for your understanding,

Cory

…I’ve selected a winner?

Lazy Earth ChairLast Friday, I held a contest for a new description of DidntYouHear.com, and the submissions were fantastic!

Unfortunately, since DYH isn’t exactly pulling in the big bucks yet, I can’t give everyone a prize, and I have to pick a winner.

Thus, I’d like to say congratulations to evilgregg for coming up with the winning description:

The lazy man’s guide to the coolest stuff on the planet.

It’s short and sweet, and does a pretty good job of describing exactly what this site is all about. Thanks Gregg!

To everyone else who participated, I’d just like to say thanks for contributing, and I’m sorry I can’t give you all a prize, since you definitely deserve one.

…DYH is back again?

Apparently, in addition to causing a DNS error that gave DYH a wonderful Error 500 Internal Server Error front page for a few days, it looks like my web hosting company was also kind enough to corrupt my Wordpress install as well, which means I just spent the last 6 hours updating Wordpress, which means that I then had to update my K2 theme install so that it would play nicely with the newly installed Wordpress, which means that I had to update my custom K2 theme so that it would play nicely with the newly installed K2, which means that I’m not exactly happy with my web hosting company right now.

Because of this whole endeavor, I’m definitely going to be switching soon though, so once I do, get ready for a revealing and then a thorough bad mouthing of my current host. Anyone have any suggestions for a new one?

Unfortunately, this unexpected delay has also set back my triumphant return by a few hours, but it looks like everything is running somewhat smoothly for now, so expect a return to normalcy by the end of today (hopefully).

Thanks to everyone for sticking with me through this trying time, and I’m looking forward to what DYH has in store for ‘08, so I hope you are too.

…DYH is back?

I fought the server and the…server won; I fought the server and the…server won.

Google ServerUnfortunately, due to a “problem with the DNS records for didntyouhear.com” this site has been down for the past four days, and anyone who visited (myself included) was handed little more than a 500 Error page.

In addition to the site going down, this DNS error also knocked out my email server, so for everyone who sent me a kind (and much appreciated) email to let me know that the site was down, I want to say thanks, and let you know that your message just came though, so I apologize for my delayed response.

The good news is that the error is now fixed, and Didn’t You Hear will be returning with full force (and then some) on Monday; so if you’ve lost all hope, then please come back on Monday for a reminder of why you started to visit DYH in the first place.

For any of you with blogs of your own out there, just remember: Backups are your friend. I try to backup as frequently as possible, but I still don’t do it enough, and all I could think of during this issue was, “Man, what if this error manages to clean out my site’s data as well”.

Thankfully it didn’t, but the potential was definitely there, so remember: Backup, Backup, Backup.

…DYH fixed the comments issue?

Gears

Bad Behavior is a Wordpress plugin that I use to prevent link spam in the DYH comment area, though it recently ran into some issues, and prevented anyone from commenting on any post on this site.

I discovered this issue when I was blocked from uploading an image to my own site, so I’m assuming that it was a no-go for all comments for the past few days.

If you tried to comment on a post, but were unable to do so, I apologize, though the problem has been fixed so you should be good to go now.

BTW: If you have a blog of your own, definitely check out Bad Behavior, as it’s helped me immensely with fixing my spam problems.

BTW Pt. 2: If you’re trying to make legitimate comments and Bad Behavior is preventing you from doing so, please let me know through the “Contact” page. It seems to work well, but if it’s blocking legitimate comments, then I may have to reevaluate its use.

Thanks!
