…It’s Website Wednesday: W/ Extra Duck?

W/ Extra Duck

W/ Extra Duck is a fantastically contagious collection of art pieces that have been given the addition of a little extra duck.

Some are hidden and some are plainly obvious, but it turns into a sort of game to try and locate them all, and you will probably find yourself rather amused by the little rubber guy after a while, so head on over to Flickr and appreciate art w/ a little extra duck.

…Photoshop is as real as it gets?

As Real As It Gets

In case you missed it, this ad for Photoshop, called “As Real As It Gets”, is a fantastically creative interpretation of what the program would look like if it existed in real life.

Also, be sure to check out the Flickr set for some behind the scenes shots, because the size of this ad is almost unbelievable!

…700 Mole-Men are taking over Flickr?

700 Mole-Men Project

The 700 Mole-Men Project is an attempt to illustrate each of the 700 “naked-mole-rat-like people known enigmatically as The Mole-men” from John Hodgman’s book, More Information Than You Require.

If you’d like to participate, just head over to the official list, pick out a name, and upload it to Flickr. Once it’s on Flickr, just add it to the 700 Mole-men Flickr group, and it will automatically show up on the site.

…It’s Website Wednesday: Flickr Panda?

Flickr Panda

Flickr’s “Explore” is Flirkr’s front page, “an introductory collection of ever-changing photos to show people the kinds of things inside the site”.

However, Explore can only highlight about 500 images per day, and since there are five thousand new images uploaded to Flickr every minute, plenty of high quality images never make it onto Explore.

To help highlight some of the other images that Flickr users have submitted, Flickr created the Flickr: Panda, a rainbow vomiting panda that spews photos from its mouth at a rate of about one every two seconds, or 43,000+ photos per day.

It might not be the front page, but how often can you say that your photo was spit up by a rainbow spewing panda bear?

…It’s Website Wednesday: Purple Pedals?

Purple Pedals

In their continuing effort to prove to the world that they haven’t yet fallen off the face of it, Yahoo! has launched a campaign called “Start Wearing Purple” to emphasize the fact that they’re…purple?

Whatever the reason, one of their better purple projects is called Purple Pedals.

Think: Bikes + Flickr + GPS + Purple +Holy moly, is this one cool ride or what!?

The idea was to give camera/GPS enabled bicycles out to webrities and have them chronicle the life of their bike with pictures that are automatically taken every 60 seconds, geo-tagged, and then displayed on a Yahoo! map.

It might not get you to switch to the ‘hoo, but it’s a cool site to check out while the search wars rage on.

…Our desires form paths?

Desire Path

A desire path is the improvised path that forms when people walk across a certain area of grass over and over again because it makes their path shorter. Eventually, the grass wears away and dies, and a path is formed.

Check out Flickr for a full gallery of what happens when man can no longer control his desires.

Candle Heart

Julie Ruiz’s fantastic movie that she made for VH1’s holiday card uses candles to create a stop motion effect that’s both beautiful and unique.

Talk about patience!

…Twitter is at war?

Color Wars 2008

The 2008 Twitter Color Wars has basically taken over the Twitter world recently, and is an interesting adaptation of a technology that, besides things like Color Wars and StrawPoll that people have created, serves no purpose. (Ok, so you can find out someone’s status, but really, where’s the fun in that?)

Twitter Color Wars is basically a popularity contest where the Twitterati rally around a single color and show their support by taking their profile picture in team colors.

Anyone can play. To join a team: log on to twitter, search for the team of your choice, then follow that team.

The War goes well beyond just a popularity contest though, as games are going to pit teams against each other to compete for total domination.

Game #1 is a round of Bad Ass RoShamBo.

To play, members took a picture of themselves in their team colors throwing their throw of choice, and then uploaded that picture to Flickr with the appropriate tags. Then, a bracket style RoShamBo tournament will be held tonight with a best of three RSB match determining the winner.

I love the fact that this game evolved out of nothing and turned into a something that everyone wants to be involved in. It’s a fun adaptation of a technology that people continue to find uses for, and there’s a lot of potential for additional games.

Which side are you on?

(And to talk a little smack on the other teams, check out SmackTalk.)

Edit: It looks like zefrank is behind it all. Check out the Colorwar story here.

…MOO is having an egg hunt?

MOO Egg Hunt

Get a jump on the Easter season with MOO’s Egg Hunt.

MOO has hidden eggs online, in MOO products, and in the great outdoors, and finding one could win you one of over 3,500 prizes.

Each working day they’ll hide new clues in the MOO Blog, and there are also clues hidden in orders for current MOO customers.

The first person to find each egg wins a prize, and another nine random finders will also win prizes, for a total of 10 winners per egg.

They’ve also partnered with Flickr, so if you’d like to get started with finding eggs in the great outdoors, and live in either London, Montreal, Bordeaux, Oaxaca, Tokyo, Paris, Niagra Falls, Toronto, New York, Brighton, Glasgow, BC, Oslo, Barcelona, Brussels, Silicon Valley, Wellington, Oxford, Austin, Konstanz, or San Francisco, then check the map for an egg near you.

…Socialthing! will manage your online life?

Socialthing!

Socialthing! “is a digital life manager that puts what you do online into one place. See everything that’s going on with your friends in all the sites you use, post stuff to multiple places at once and more!”

Basically, it takes your online life and combines it into one easy to read, follow, and update page. Then, instead of checking each site individually to see new messages, updates, photos, etc., you can just check Socialthing! and see them all in one place. The goal is to make interacting across multiple sites as easy as interacting through just one.

Currently, Socialthing! supports del.icio.us, Digg, Facebook, Flickr, Last.fm, LiveJournal, Pownce, Twitter, Vimeo, and YouTube, with plans for more services as the company expands.

I’ve been beta testing the site for the past few days, and I think the service has some definite possibility. Unfortunately I ran into an issue with adding my Digg profile, but issues are to be expected with any beta release, and I’m sure they’ll have things running smoothly in no time. Everything else loaded without issue though, and I was impressed by the speed with which Socialthing! fetched my data.

Overall, I’d say it’s a useful tool that has the potential to become an indispensable one. Lifestreaming is quickly becoming more popular as everyone tries to manage their vast online world, and Socialthing! is one of the first sites out of the gate, which should give them a jump on adapting and changing to meet users needs with new features and functions.

They should be coming out of beta this weekend, so head on over and give it a try.
