…It’s Things Thursday: Something?

SomethingStore

Are you the type of person that likes surprises?

Then you’re probably the type of person that would like the SomethingStore, a website that sends you “something, an item selected randomly among many things from our inventory, for $10 (free shipping) and you will find out what your something is when you receive it”.

What could this something be?

It may be something you need, something you want or something you desire. (Though it also may be total crap.)

Yours may be a cool gadget, rare book, table game, handmade necklace, reverse clock, box of gourmet chocolates, set of shiny shower curtains, popular video game, big-box retailer gift card, the latest version of a software, a set of kitchen knives, a pair of designer jeans, garden tool, kitchen appliance, unique home decor item, electronic equipment, magazine subscription, office supply item, or…

Your something will most likely be brand new, though it may also be refurbished or antique.

So SomethingStore can send you anything?

Well, besides “items or services that are illegal to trade in United States”, yes!

Sound good?

Then discover your something is today.

…Paint chips can be beautiful?

Belmont Art Park Paint Chip

This beautiful piece of paint chip was part of the Belmont Art Park wall that was illegally demolished by real estate developers earlier this year.

At over 1 centimeter thick, it appears to consist of 150-200 layers of paint, and shows what happens when you ‘just paint over it’.

…CCTV helps make great films?

CCTV film making is an interesting concept that lends itself well to filming alternative and sometimes illegal activities like free-running.

By “video sniffing” the signal from wireless CCTV networks, filmmakers are able to capture the images from these existing cameras and use them for their own creative vision.

This film, called The Duellists, was shot inside of a shopping center using the central control room’s 160 cameras over the course of three nights:

It’s not exactly the highest of quality, but sometimes, low budget is the way to go.

…It’s Tuner Tuesday: Formula Drift?

Formula Drift Logo

On Saturday, I had the chance to go and see Formula D’s “The Finals” at Irwindale Speedway (yes, I did get stuck on Interstate 5 on the way down from San Francisco due to that massive accident), and I must say, if you’re at all a fan of the four wheeled machine, make sure you check out one of Formula Drift’s events at a track near you.

Pontiac Solstice

If you’re not familiar with the sport, think of drifting as two automotive ballerinas battling it out in a boxing match. It’s gracefully controlled mayhem, and in my opinion, it’s easily the best form of four-wheeled entertainment on the planet.

…Soap box racing is back?

S.F.V.I.S.B.F.

The San Fernando Valley Illegal Soap Box Federation (S.F.V.I.S.B.F.) is a group of people that get together on the weekends and bomb hills in their homemade soap box racers.

Surprisingly, despite the illegal nature of their sport, there are rules and regulations in place to prevent injuries, and everything appears to be rather organized.

Check out the video for some speedy action; and I must say, it actually looks like a blast.

Now where did I put that nailgun…

…Illegal postings are getting canceled?

Cancelled

Trying to combat illegal fly posting in your city? Then do what Glasgow did, and fight fire with fire. These canceled stickers were part of a year long project to stop the illegal act, and have proven to be an effective means of confusing fans and preventing postings.

…Flys can post?

Fly Post Close Up

Flyposting is “the act of placing advertising posters or flyers in illegal places” (thanks Wikipedia). It’s a very underappreciated form of expression, but one English flyposter found a way of using irony to his advantage. The result? A flypost of a fly posting.

…AllofMP3.com is being closed down?

AllofMP3

RIP AllofMP3.com, I only wish I could have known you better. The used to be secret spot for downloading full quality music at your quality of choice without the hassle of DRM has finally succumb to its own popularity, as Russia has finally agreed to the US’s (RIAA’s) demands to shut it down. Though I must say I knew at some point that it would get shut down (if it seems too good to be true…), but I was actually surprised by how long they managed to stay in business. Even with this latest nail in the coffin, they still stand by their statement that what they are doing is not illegal (though I don’t think it will help much at this point). If only the record labels would have learned a lesson from AllofMP3’s popularity, instead of spending all of their time trying to shut it down, we might finally have a music download system that makes sense (and dollars) in the US. Oh well, I guess it’s back to P2P networks then until the record companies can figure things out. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates life for me.
