…Internet forums need better behavior?

In the AOL era, forums and chat rooms were the place to be.

However, as Facebook and MySpace began sucking up everyone’s extra time, forums and chat rooms were suddenly slotted under poking and biting chumps on the Internet order of importance scale.

Fortunately, the forum has remained a vital source of information for some, and because of this, a set of laws and rules has slowly developed to make them more enjoyable.

Unfortunately, not everyone follows these rules, and internet anonymity means that there’s always someone who wants to ruin everyone else’s good time. If that someone happens to be you, then be sure to watch the following video for a quick lesson on How To Behave On An Internet Forum.

Pwned.

And from the same guy, and equally funny video titled “How To Ruin Xbox Live For Everyone Else”:

…It’s Website Wednesday: Popurls?

Popurls

Popurls is “the dashboard for the latest web-buzz, a single page that encapsulates up-to-the-minute headlines from the most popular sites on the internet”.

Think of it as the best of the best, gathered up and laid out in a clean and easy to read format, with plenty of customization to make it your own.

If that’s not enough, you can also access popurls on your iPhone, via Twitter, through Jaiku, from Facebook, on the PS3 and PSP, and with the Wii.

…It’s Website Wednesday: Wikia Search?

Wikia Search

Wikia Search wants to take down the Google giant with a freely licensed (open source) search engine.

Since Google is now a $200 Billion company, it’s easy to assume that they’re going to be a bit guarded with regard to their search technology; as it is, after all, the driving force behind most of those billions.

However, Wikia Search feels that by putting users in control, they can create a search engine that works faster, is more accurate, and is more informative.

How is it going to do this?

By using the power of a community of users acting together in an open, transparent, and public way.

Their belief is that “search is a fundamental part of the infrastructure of the Internet, and that it can and should therefore be done in an open, objective, accountable way”.

Though it’s currently only an Alpha release (meaning the results are pretty bad because there is no user feedback data), as that data starts to roll in, expect the results to get better at an impressively quick pace. (At least that’s the hope.)

It’s definitely an interesting project, and I hope it’s successful too, because if it can do for search what Wikipedia did for the encyclopedia, then Google definitely needs to keep an eye on this David.

…It’s Website Wednesday: Map of Southern California fires?

Southern California Fires

As fires continue to devastate Southern California, many people have turned to the Internet for up to the minute information about what’s going on.

In response, the Los Angeles Times has created a map with information about what has burned and what has been contained; and it’s amazing to see just how wide spread these fires are.

I wish the best for everyone involved.

…Bob Ostertag is giving away his music?

Bob Ostertag w00t

Bob Ostertag’s w00t “is a free, internet-only release composed entirely from fragments of music from video games”.

Created as a collage of computer game sound and image, it’s Bob’s first release “to skip the CD-for-sale stage and go directly to free Internet download, under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license”.

What does that mean?

It means Ben encourages you to “download, copy, send to your friends, remix, mutilate, and mash-up” his music as long as you share in the same manner.

If only all music could be so free.

…The VanityRing will show off your stats?

VanityRing

If you consider yourself to be an Internet celebrity, then show the world your status with the VanityRing.

By plugging the VanityRing into the custom docking box and then typing your name into the included software, the VanityRing searches Google, and updates your ring’s screen with the number of hits your name pulls up.

“The VanityRing doesn’t have a jewel, instead it shows the number of hits one gets, when he searches Google for the name of the person who wears it, a more adequate value in our time.”

How valuable are you?

…Apple is Democratic?

iPhoneAh conspiracy theories. There’s just something so wonderfully captivating about their possible truthiness. The latest comes on the heels of Apple’s big event, and claims that Steve Jobs’ well-known leftist slant may have found its way into the wonderphone’s promotional material.

As you can see from the picture, the chosen web page for the iPhone’s internet demo is a decidedly democratic snapshot of the New York Times, taken during last year’s elections. Lucky coincidence, or overt subliminal messaging? You decide.
