…Insanely Great Tees loves the iPhone?

iPhone Contest

Insanely Great Tees wants you to make an iPhone ad, and for motivation, they’re rewarding the winner with an iPhone of their very own (and probably a little bit of Internet fame as well).

iPhone Contest How It Works

To enter, unleash your creative side and make a 30 second spot that is both funny, and includes the words “I’m an iPhone”. Other than that, the rest is up to you, though I’d suggest using puppets. Lots and lots of puppets.

Nixie Wristwatch

Jeff Thomas loves Nixie tubes (glass tubes that are filled with gas and can display numerals or other information). Most people are content with clocks that feature the technology, but Jeff wanted a watch, so he designed his own. Sadly, he only made 20, and they’re already sold out, but hopefully another company picks up where Jeff left off.

…It’s April Fools’ Day?

Today is one of the Internet’s favorite holidays. Though I’m not going to try and trick any of the DYH readers (I promise), I am going to be covering the hoaxes and pranks that appear around the net. Here are some of the better ones:

Google Paper

Google announced Gmail Paper, a permanent archive service that prints your emails for free onto paper that is supported by giant ads that are printed on the back. It handles attachments, is good for the environment, and there is no limit on the number of times you can use it.

Google TiSP

Google announced TiSP, a free in-home wireless broadband service that taps into your toilet. The service is supported by the use of “information gathered by discreet DNA sequencing of your personal bodily output to display online ads that are contextually relevant to your culinary preferences, current health status and likelihood of developing particular medical conditions going forward”.

Random Crap

Woot sold a $1,000,001 bag of crap. When users clicked on the picture of the bag, they were given a coupon code that knocked the cost down to $1.

Fucked Company

Tech Crunch, a site that focuses on Web 2.0 startups, announced that it had acquired Fucked Company, a site that focuses on Web 2.0 shutdowns.

ThinkGeek

ThinkGeek announced “stuff for smart asses”, including a WiiHelm(et), an 8-bit tie, inhalable caffeine stix, and a lonely guy dream vacation digital photo frame. (They also announced that the iPhone was now shipping, but that’s just cruel.)

CollegeHumor GoDaddy

CollegeHumor made it look as if their domain had expired and was now for sale through GoDaddy.

haterTonic

Technorati switched around their letters and renamed their site haterTonic.

Tinfoil Hat

World Of Warcraft introduced a new item called the Tinfoil Hat. “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you”.

CrunchGear

CrunchGear gave their entire site a 1999 redesign, complete with flashy gifs, a horrible background, and a no structure (though it still reminds me of a lot of current MySpace profile pages).

…It’s Website Wednesday: WikiProject Porn Stars?

So somehow I got the days confused and managed to post a Things Thursday on a Wednesday, and completely ignore Website Wednesday in the process, so here’s my repentance:

Wikipedia Shauna O’Brien

Wikipedia is really looking to push the boundaries of decency with their latest project: Porn Stars. From the site:

The project aims to implement a consistent format for articles of pornographic actors, actresses and models, as well as related infobox templates. Additionally, the project is to implement a standard means of procuring information on pornographic actresses, as well as to address what is proper for an encyclopedic article on porn stars.

I guess if you’re going to be the place to go for online information about anything and everything, you can’t just ignore the porn world. That would be like ignoring a substantial part of the history of the Internet. Surprisingly (or not surprsingly depending on how you view the ‘Pedia) the articles are actually pretty informative, giving a complete career history, filmography, appearances, and much more. Plus, you can finally get the “real or fake” question answered by more than just a “dude, totally”. It’s a dirty world, but somebody’s got to document it.

…It’s Things Thursday: FON?

Starbucks Fonero

Last week I mentioned the FON free router giveaway, but this week I’m going to dive a little deeper into the service that is FON. FON is “the world’s largest WiFi community”. The service works like this: Members share their wireless Internet access at home, and in return, can get free WiFi access through any of the other Fonero Access Points.

Linus Bill Alien

There are two ways of sharing your Internet. Either you’re a Linus, and you share your WiFi in exchange for free WiFi from other users, or you’re a Bill, and you sell your WiFi by the day and split the profits with FON (you can also be an Alien and pay for the FON service, but who wants to do that?). The La Fonera router is a special kind of router that outputs two signals. One is a private signal that you can use just for yourself for a secure connection that you don’t have to share. The other is a public signal that other Fon users and Aliens can access. You can even personalize the page that other Foneros see when they log onto your FON Access Point, telling them a little about yourself, your local area, or just to say “hi” to other members. Since the service gets better and better as more people sign on and share their Internet, FON has been running a series of promotions lately to give away free Fonero routers to just about anyone who wants one. Their latest promotion is called Fonbucks, where “FON + Starbucks = cash for you”. It works like this: If you live above or near a Starbucks (or any café/coffee shop) they’ll send you a free router that you can use to steal some of Starbucks’ wireless revenue with. Users pay $2 per day (much less than the $10 that Starbucks charges for a single day), and you receive $1 of that in return. It’s a definite win-win, a hopefully a good way of spreading the “movimiento” (movement). If you’re interested in free WiFi, or making some cash off of sharing your own, then definitely check out FON, because the more users the better.

Bonus: I’ve got a free La Fonero router to give away to one lucky DYH reader. If you want it, just say so in the comments, and I’ll pick out one comment at random and send a router your way. It’s Fontastic.

…It’s Website Wednesday: Favourite Website Awards?

Favourite Website Awards

Today’s website is actually a website about websites. Got that? The FWA, or Favourite Website Awards, is a daily updated collection of the best of the web. Each day, a new Site Of The Day is chosen, each month, a new Site Of The Month is chosen, and each year, a new Site Of The Year is chosen (and so on I’d imagine if it survives that long). Each site features a brief description and a link, though that’s probably all you’ll need to begin your web surfing adventure. FWA also features interviews with the featured sites’ designers, which give great insight into the hearts and minds of the Internet’s creators. The sites are great and the topics are vast and varied, so be prepared to kill a few hours just looking around, but I promise it will be worth it. You’ve been warned.

…Mark Erickson knows Google’s secrets?

Mark Erickson and his “Infinite Solutions” is trying to become the next viral video star with his YouTube documentation of the process required to sign up for the so secret even Google doesn’t know about it version of Google Television Beta. With everyone desperately hoping for some truth to the rumor (myself included), the video raced down the Internet’s tubes like a roaring river, prompting many people to try the elaborate steps required to get an invite (myself not included). In response to the numerous claims that the video was a fraud, Mark even posted a second video showing the mythical program once again, though once again hiding crucial details with creative editing choices.

Though I do think TV is heading to the Internet (See my 2007 predictions), this unfortunately isn’t it. Good try though Mark, I will give you credit where credit is due for your amazing editing skills.

…This is DidntYouHear’s 1000th post?

1000

I’ve reached an epic milestone in my journey to make DidntYouHear everything I want it to be today with the writing of this, my 1,000th post. I can’t believe it. I’ve done the impossible. One thousand little tidbits of information that I hope you found enjoyable, enlighting, or at least entertaining. Though DYH is still small, it’s growing by the day, and I only have the readers to thank. In just five months, DYH has gone from 0 readers to an average of 400 readers per day, Technorati ranks DYH as the 54,399th most linked to blog with 91 links from 63 other blogs, 60 people subscribe to the RSS feed, and Alexa says DYH is the 509,158th most visited site on the Internet. Though by blogosphere standards, these numbers aren’t exactly staggering, keep in mind that DYH has only been around for five months, and is still a relative baby in the eyes of the Internet.

Enough stats though, I’d like to use this post to thank the readers. Without you, DYH would be nothing. I hope that I’ve given back to you in some way, and that you’ve found information and opinions here that you would never have found anywhere else. In the future, I will continue to grow and improve DYH. Look for a design update as soon as I can get a grip on my WordPress coding skills, and more and better games, contests, and prizes as part of TGI Friday. Also, I’m looking to bring you more exclusive content that you won’t find anywhere else, so be on the lookout. It’s been a great journey so far, but it’s only just begun, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

Sincerely,

Cory O’Brien

…Stephen Colbert rules the internet.

Stephen Colbert continues to clog the Internet’s tubes and the YouTubes with his witty antics. Here he is explaining the new Cingular AT&T deal. Whatever it’s called, I hope it hurries up with the iPhone, because I’m flacid with rage.
