…It’s Movie Monday: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog?

Dr. Horrible\'s Sing-Along Blog

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is “the (true) story of Dr. Horrible (wow, really?), a low-rent super-villain trying to get into the Evil League of Evil, defeat his boorish nemesis, Captain Hammer, and win the girl of his dreams, Penny (or at least talk to her)”.

Joss Whedon directed the film, Neil Patrick Harris trained his acting talents to the main character, and the goal is to test out a new type of video format that is professionally produced and designed to spread virally.

It’s only available for a few more days though before going iTunes exclusive, so make sure you watch it now and see what all the fuss is about.

…John Mayer’s iTunes crashes too?

John Mayer Apple Crash Report

Apparently John Mayer’s talents extend beyond the musical arena from time to time, because when his iTunes crashed as he was trying to load it up with new running music to replace “Bittersweet Symphony” with, he typed out one of the best crash reports I’d imagine anyone at Apple has ever seen.

…You can turn any song into an iPhone ringtone?

iPhone Ringtone

Apple might make you pay a dollar per song that you want to use as a ringtone on your new iPhone, but there’s a way to create custom ringtones using only Apple software that costs just a few extra minutes of your time.

    GarageBand
  1. Open GarageBand.
  2. iTunes Library

  3. Drag a song from your iTunes library into the GarageBand window to create a new track.
  4. Cycle Region

  5. Click the Cycle Region button.
  6. Yellow Bar

  7. Adjust the yellow bar to the edges of the part of the song that you would like to use. (It must be less than 40 seconds in length.)
  8. Auto Adjust

  9. If the song is short enough, iTunes can automatically select the appropriate length to convert into a ringtone.
  10. Send To iTunes

  11. Once you’ve got your region selected, simply go to Share -> Send Ringtone to iTunes, and GarageBand will convert and then add your new ringtone to iTunes’ ringtone section automatically.
  12. iTunes Ringtone

  13. Sync your iPhone, and rejoice at your newly acquired ability to add any song as a ringtone.

It’s that easy.

…Jackass 2.5 will be free?

Jackass Movie

On December 19, Jackass 2.5, the half-sequel to the rather popular Jackass movie series, will officially become the “first broadband movie ever distributed by a major studio”.

For two weeks, anyone will be able to view the hour-long film in its entirety for free, with a pre and post-roll the only intrusion into their Jackass pleasure.

After the free preview, the film will be available on DVD, through iTunes, on Amazon, and anywhere else Paramount Pictures can make a buck off of the pain of others.

If it works, there could be a swing towards using this method of distribution in the future, so check it out, because free is hard to beat.

…Amazon’s Kindle is a new kind of eBook?

Newsweek - Amazon: Reinventing The BookWith the Kindle, Amazon hopes to revolutionize (and digitize) the book.

Specs?

Six inch E-Ink screen, EV-DO “Whispernet”, 60 second downloads, 30 hours of battery life, and two hour recharges.

Cost?

The device itself will go for $399, while books will be $9.99. (Learn anything from Apple’s iTunes pricing, Amazon?)

Will this be the device that finally brings eBooks to the masses?

Only time will tell, but it at least seems like a good start.

…It’s Things Thursday: Facebook Gifts?

Facebook Gifts Blue Spheres

Today, the ‘book and the ‘soft joined forces, and Microsoft gave Facebook $240 million at a valuation of $15 billion for an expansion of their advertising partnership.

$15 billion?

A site that lets people poke each other and share pictures is worth $15 billion?

Yes; and here’s why: Facebook prints money.

Facebook has created a product that turns a 99.99% profit, has incredibly (almost infinitely) high demand, and costs nothing to make.

What is this mystery product?

Facebook Gifts.

What are Facebook Gifts?

“Facebook Gifts allows you to send personalized messages with icons to your friends on Facebook.”

Basically a .gif with a message, these “Gifts” are a perfect example of why Facebook is worth $15 billion (and probably even more).

Facebook Gift Unicorn

Take, for example, today’s Gift: A Unicorn.

I’m going to go ahead and assume that with a few MS Paint skills and a spare hour, I could crank out the unicorn image that they’re using.

And if I were Facebook, and I did go ahead and create this unicorn Gift; how much would I expect to get paid for my hour of work?

$10 million.

That’s right, Facebook will eventually make $10 million from this crappy unicorn .gif.

Not bad for an hour’s work.

Why?

I have no idea.

To clarify: I do know why they’ll make $10 million: Because people will eventually buy 10,000,000 of these crappy unicorns. What I don’t know is why people will eventually buy 10,000,000 of these crappy unicorns. I mean, it is a crappy unicorn after all.

I think part of the reason why Facebook can sell so many of these things is that they have hit upon the perfect price point. Users don’t see $1 as being a lot of money, so they’ll gladly skip their next iTunes download to let their friend know that they care.

If Gifts were free, no one would want one. You’d give them to your friends, and they’d simply add them to the pile of other free gifts. Put a $1 price tag on the Gift however, and suddenly, giving a gift is a momentous occasion. You’re spending your hard earned cash, and sending your friend something of value.

And hey, it’s not like everyone else is going to get the same one, right? Aren’t they at least part of a limited edition?

Yes; if you consider 10,000,000 to be a limited edition.

That’s right, 9.999,999 other people are going to get that very same ‘limited edition’ unicorn, and Facebook is going to get 10,000,000 one dollar bills added to their bank account.

Amazing.

Like I said, they print money.

And despite my despising of the Facebook Gift idea, I will say this: I’ll gladly plop down a hard earned Washington for one of these the day Facebook comes out with a Gift in the shape of a T-Shirt that says: “My friend just spent $1, and all I got was this lousy Gift”.

Hey, a guy can dream…

…Your Starbucks coffee comes with music?

Apple - iTunes - Starbucks

To get folks to try out the new Starbucks-Apple iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, Apple will be giving away $50 million in “Song of the Day” cards to coffee customers from October 2 to November 7.

The cards will be good for a hand-picked song from the iTunes library, which might sound limiting, but with artists like Bob Dylan, Joss Stone, Dave Matthews, Bebel Gilberto, John Mayer, KT Tunstall, John Legend, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, Keith Urban, Paul McCartney, Sia, Band of Horses, Hilary McRae, Frederico Aubele and Sara Bareilles, it’ll probably be something worth hearing.

It might not pay for the $5 coffee, but at least you get something with your daily caffeine fix.
