…Memorial Day weekend is great for projects?

If you have a day off this Memorial Day weekend, or if you are just looking for something to do, why not take on a project? To inspire you, I’ve put together five ideas that are (relatively) simple, (relatively) easy, and (relatively) cheap, and should be doable during the next few days (hopefully).

1) The Twilight Zone

A simple Zippo trick that takes just minutes to master, but is sure to impress.

2) Tic-Tac Rechargeable Flashlight

This small flashlight is recharged when you shake it, and is a great way to learn about simple circuits.

3) Cheap, Dirty, At Home Screen Printing

With an old picture frame, some curtains, sun emulsion, a garden hose, and ink, you can screen print out your very own fashion in just hours. Never wear the same shirt again!

4) Create Vector Art

This one requires Photoshop and Flash, but if you’ve got those programs, custom backgrounds are just a vector away.

5) Kinetic Wall Art Clock

Take apart an inexpensive clock and turn it into wall art with a subtly changing moire effect that would make any MoMA proud.

Now stop wasting the day, and get going!

Nocturne

Nocturne is an app from Blacktree (the guys behind Quicksilver) that “ctrl-opt-cmd-8”s your Mac for you. If you’ve never pressed that button combination, go ahead and try it now, I’ll wait. (Press it again to return to normal)

Cool, huh? No, that neat little trick isn’t just for show. The dark colors and white text are actually supposed to be a lot easier to read at night.

Nocturne’s “Night Vision Mode” changes the colors of your computer, just like you just did, but it also adds:

Proper color correction in monochrome modes - you don’t lose all your blues or reds when you tint the screen.
Window shadow toggling - if glowing windows aren’t your thing.
Background removal - hide the desktop picture so you don’t see a inverted version.

With just a few simple changes, Nocturne just might make night time computing your new favorite hobby.

Steve Pavlina, the personal development guru, recently put together and posted a personal productivity heuristic called Rules to Boost You Productivity. Though he started out with just 33 behavioral rules (both general and situation-specific), response has been so good that he’s expanded the list to include 99 tips and tricks to help you get things done more efficiently. With ideas like “Worst First”, “Timeboxing”, and “Relaxify”, there should be at least a few new ideas for you to add to your productivity arsenal. Now get going.

As baseball season begins, it’s once again time to break out your negotiation skills if you want to get into a game, and you don’t want to sit in the nosebleeds. To help your quest, Consumerist sat down with a former season/group ticket representative, and came up with a list of ten tricks (and one bonus trick) to score a seat. With tips like “Buy odd numbers of tickets” and “Go alone, sit near the dugout”, these might not be good for the family outing, but for the die hard fan who just wants to watch his team play from as good of a location as possible, they’re indispensable bits of knowledge to keep in mind. Today is one of the Internet’s favorite holidays. Though I’m not going to try and trick any of the DYH readers (I promise), I am going to be covering the hoaxes and pranks that appear around the net. Here are some of the better ones:

Google Paper

Google announced Gmail Paper, a permanent archive service that prints your emails for free onto paper that is supported by giant ads that are printed on the back. It handles attachments, is good for the environment, and there is no limit on the number of times you can use it.

Google TiSP

Google announced TiSP, a free in-home wireless broadband service that taps into your toilet. The service is supported by the use of “information gathered by discreet DNA sequencing of your personal bodily output to display online ads that are contextually relevant to your culinary preferences, current health status and likelihood of developing particular medical conditions going forward”.

Random Crap

Woot sold a $1,000,001 bag of crap. When users clicked on the picture of the bag, they were given a coupon code that knocked the cost down to $1.

Fucked Company

Tech Crunch, a site that focuses on Web 2.0 startups, announced that it had acquired Fucked Company, a site that focuses on Web 2.0 shutdowns.

ThinkGeek

ThinkGeek announced “stuff for smart asses”, including a WiiHelm(et), an 8-bit tie, inhalable caffeine stix, and a lonely guy dream vacation digital photo frame. (They also announced that the iPhone was now shipping, but that’s just cruel.)

CollegeHumor GoDaddy

CollegeHumor made it look as if their domain had expired and was now for sale through GoDaddy.

Technorati switched around their letters and renamed their site haterTonic.

Tinfoil Hat

World Of Warcraft introduced a new item called the Tinfoil Hat. “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you”.

CrunchGear

CrunchGear gave their entire site a 1999 redesign, complete with flashy gifs, a horrible background, and a no structure (though it still reminds me of a lot of current MySpace profile pages).
