…Red Apples taste much better?

Apple Store

Today, Apple released the iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED special edition of their ubiquitous music player. It’s a new color for the iPod nano product line, but what makes this one unique is that for every player sold, Apple will give $10 of the purchase price to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS in Africa. It’s a cool concept; because the player won’t cost any more than the standard 4GB nano (though I hear the fixed pricing is part of the whole RED agreement), and you can give something back when you get something for yourself. (RED) is the pet project of Bono (and Apple does love Bono), with the idea being you now have a choice about what your purchases can do for others. This is a definite win-win situation, so if you’ve been putting off purchasing that new iPod, now may be the time.

…Google Hearts The Mac?

Google Mac Downloads

Google is finally beginning to show some support for Mac users. They’ve created an Official Google Mac Blog to update users on all the new Google news relating to the Mac. Though there’s currently only one post, it’s a helpful link to Google’s new page for Mac Software Downloads, a useful site for downloading all of the Mac software supported by Google on one page. Some of the programs include Google SketchUp, Google Earth, and Picasa Web Albums Uploader. Plus, they’ve got a Google Mac Sites Search for gathering up all your Mac news in a very Google(y) way.

…Mac’s OS comes with a built in zoom feature?

Here’s a cool feature built into the latest version of Mac’s OS: Screen Zoom using the mouse scrollwheel. Just hold ctrl and use the scrollwheel to zoom in and out, and move the focus by moving the pointer. This trick also works with the two finger “scroll” trackpads. Just hold ctrl and you can zoom in an out by moving your two fingers up and down.

…Greenpeace wants a less poisonous Apple?

Greenpeace Apple

Apparently Greenpeace has taken a dislike to Apple and is calling for change with their impression of the Apple homepage. Calling them “Poison Apples”, they say that Apple continues to use hazardous substances in their products that other companies have abandoned, and that these chemicals end up being dropped off in third world countries rather than being recycled. They are asking Apple to:

  • Remove the worst toxic chemicals from all their products and production lines.
  • Offer and promote free “take-back” for all their products everywhere they are sold.

Considering Apple’s change to smaller and generally less packaging, I think they are taking steps in the right direction, and more environmentally friendly products are always a plus, I just question Greenpeace’s targeting of Apple specifically instead of the tech industry in general. They did do a pretty good job of mocking up an Apple homepage though, I’ll give them that.
