Getting good car shots is a mix of art and science that few can master. Designers spend countless hours shaping each curve and crease so that it pleases the eye (and the wind tunnel), but without simple techniques and basic knowledge, you’ll never be able to transfer that beauty onto film.

Motive Magazine has been on top lately with their photography style, capturing the fluid lines and sultry speed of the automotive world in a way that is nearly unrivaled. Thankfully, for the automotive artists among us, they have put together a post that shares some of their tips and tricks that they picked up along the way.

From knowing your equipment and picking the proper camera setting to waiting for the right time of day and the rule of thirds, it might not make you a professional overnight, but it’ll definitely help you get closer to the shots you’re envisioning when you press the shutter.

…The Sorapot is the perfect teapot?

The Sorapot by Joey Roth has taken the design world by storm by combining an architectural shape and simple functionality into a teapot that “brings tea’s quiet beauty into sharp focus.

It’s made from 304 stainless steel, borosilicate glass (Pyrex), and food-grade silicone for long lasting good looks, and “articulates the ritual of tea making in a thoroughly modern way”.

In addition to good looks, the Sorapot also stays green with a sustainable approach to packaging, including post-consumer recycled cardboard and molded pulp, natural jute rope, and the avoidance of tape or staples. (See TreeHugger for more details on the packaging.)

…Kipp Wettstein makes beautiful large format cameras?

Kipp Wettstein makes his own large format cameras as part of what he calls The Camera Project.

The cameras are designed to suit Kipp’s “operational tendencies for the singular application of mobility”, and make a “simple, elegant and accurate method to connect the lens and film planes”.

    The beauty of the design is that it is built around the elegant form of the image cone produced by the lens. Not only does this design yield an attractive camera but it is extremely accurate. The lens and film planes have a parallel accuracy within the fractions of a millimeter. These designs have no perspective-controlling movements. They are small, lightweight and extremely precise.

His latest, called the 8×10 Carbon/Aluminum, is a beautiful “portable, wide-angle camera using a molded carbon fiber cone attached to a body plate machined from a solid block of 7075-T651 aircraft aluminum”. The lens is a Schneider 165mm Super Angulon, and “at four pounds, its weight nearly matches that of the camera body”.

…Some Photoshop work is disasterous?

With great power comes great responsibility, and unfortunately, the work of those featured on Photoshop Disasters severely lacks some of the former, and most of the latter.

The site is a collection of professionally Photoshopped images that skipped a round or two of quality control, because the end result is often a monstrous concoction of inhuman impossibilities that will make you question your day job. (Get paid to erase butt cracks from the covers of magazines? Sure!)

Sadly, these types of images fed the world a definition of literally unachievable beauty, so keep this site in mind the next time you find yourself saying “I wish I could look like that”.

…It’s Tuner Tuesday: Koenigsegg Edition?

When a car already has 1018 horsepower and runs on E85 ethanol, it’s hard to top it, but Koenigsegg has done just that with the CCX and CCXR Edition.

The aim of the Edition is to “deliver superior performance – on the track, in a straight line and on country roads – and to do so in style and comfort.”

Both are fitted with the 4.8L twin-supercharged engine, and have been track-tuned with modified shock absorbers, stiffer springs, anti-roll bars, reset dampers, and a lowered chassis.

The carbon fiber bodies have also been enhanced for additional downforce with an optimized rear wing, front winglets, and a larger front splitter and nolder, all left in raw carbon fiber form so that you can appreciate their beauty. And because it’s raw carbon fiber, “each individual section of carbon fibre bodywork has been painstakingly matched and then joined together inside out like a tailored suit, to create a stunning pinstripe effect. The process is so time-consuming that it takes almost twice as much time to create the clear-coated visible carbon body compared to the normal painted carbon CCX body.”

The interior features special anodized aluminum trim and a redesigned Koenigsegg Chronocluster and center console to “conform the Edition’s exclusive status.”
